How many applications is my school allowed to submit?
Wake County public high schools may submit up to two applications. Each application should be submitted by a different arts teacher and propose a different visiting artist. Any arts teacher may apply.
How much will this cost my school?
Nothing! Although the visiting artist will be paid $800 for the day, this will cost your school nothing. A portion of the proceeds from Pieces of Gold has been designated to pay for these master classes so the program would be implemented at no cost to your school.
Who are the artists?
United Arts has artists from a variety of disciplines for you to choose from.

- Music: Jason Karn (opera)
- Music: Shana Tucker (strings, vocal music)
- Music: Kobie Watkins (jazz)
- Theatre: Hayes Twisdale (technical production)
- Theatre: Donna Washington (storytelling)
- Theatre: Mike Wiley (monologue coaching)
- Visual Art: Eric McRay (collage)
You may propose another professional artist of any discipline. Proposed artists should be experts in their field, have experience working with older students, and offer a perspective different than what you offer your students. If you choose to propose an artist, you will need to include their credentials/resume in your application.
How long would the artist be at my school?
Artists will spend one day at your school and will teach up to three classes during your normal class times.
When will we find out if our day of master classes will be funded?
Notifications will be sent via email by the end of September.
How do we schedule our master class?
Once you receive official notification from United Arts that your proposed master class will be funded, schools will be responsible for working directly with the artist to determine the specific day they will spend at your school. All master classes should take place during the school day between October 1, 2018 and June 11, 2019.
Who does the contract? How will artists be paid?
Once a master class is approved, United Arts staff will initiate the three-way contract which will need to be signed by the artist, your school principal, and United Arts. United Arts will be responsible for paying the artist.
Are the artists background checked?
United Arts will clear all artists through our standard background check, as is done for all Artists in Schools programming.
