Piedmont Laureate Word Tasting
Poet Jaki Shelton Green, the 2009 Piedmont Laureate, will be celebrating Arts & Humanities Month by offering a poetry Word Tasting to the patrons of three Triangle restaurants on Thursday, October 8, 2009. For the breakfast hour, 8:00–9:00 am, the Laureate will be at the Peace Street Starbucks in Raleigh. For lunch, 12:30–1:30 pm, she will be at the Piedmont restaurant on Foster Street in Durham. For dinner, 6:30–7:30 pm, she will be at Mama Dip’s Kitchen on Rosemary Street in Chapel Hill. At each site she will read selections of her poetry and visit with restaurant patrons. To attend the Word Tasting, customers simply plan to have a meal at one of the participating restaurants during the scheduled appearance time. There is no additional charge.
 
The Piedmont Laureate Program is sponsored by the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, Durham Arts Council, United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County and the Orange County Arts Commission. “We launched the program to focus attention on the literary arts, specifically in comfortable settings,” explained Eleanor Oakley, President/CEO of United Arts. “Because our region is so rich in talented authors, we wanted an event that brought our communities together. October is Arts & Humanities Month, and we want the Word Tasting to be one of the first celebrations.”
 
The Piedmont Laureate program is dedicated to “building a literary bridge for residents to come together and celebrate the art of writing, enriching the lives of all our citizens.” The Laureate Program, in 2010, will expand to five counties: Alamance, Durham, Johnston, Orange, and Wake—and will be selecting an area novelist for the focus of the program in the coming year.
