In December, the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County awarded 20 cash grant awards in support of professional development initiatives for artists. Cash awards totaled just over $23,000. The requests for support totaled $54,655, a 10 percent increase over last year’s applicant pool.
Grant recipients, from a pool of 42 applicants, reside in Wake, Johnston, Vance and Warren counties. Grant amounts ranged from $700 to $1,500, and artistic fields represented included dance, literature, film/video, arts and crafts, and both 2- and 3-dimensional visual art. The grant funds will be used for professional development initiatives in the 2009 calendar year.
United Arts supports individual artists through a regional, competitive program designed to help advance the recipients’ artistic careers by awarding grants for professional development workshops and conferences, equipment, marketing materials and more.
This collaborative program for individual artists began in 1996, under the auspices of the North Carolina Arts Council and in collaboration with arts councils in a five-county region. Artists residing in Franklin, Johnston, Wake, Warren and Vance counties are eligible to apply for grants to further their artistic careers. United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County administers this program for the five-county area.
