The United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County proudly assists with the local competition of the 2007 Congressional High School Arts Competition, Artistic Discovery, for the Honorable Brad Miller (13th Congressional District) and the Honorable David Price (4th Congressional District).
The 13th District's winners were announced on May 5, 2007, at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
The first place entry, "A Night of Artist's Block: Self Portrait." by Sam Ogden of Cary High School in Cary, will hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one year. Ogden will be flown by American Airlines to Washington, DC, where he will attend a reception in honor of the district winners from across the country. His work will hang in the Cannon Tunnel as part of a special show over the next year.
Ogden received a $500 US Savings Bond from AT&T, and complimentary framing of his artwork by Jerry's Artarama. Ogden's art teacher is Shirley McIver. Ms. McIver also was honored at the Awards Ceremony with a workshop gift certificate to Jerry's Artarama and an honorarium to provide substitute pay for a day off. Prizes for Ms. McIver are provided by Jerry's Artarama and AT&T.
Second through fourth place winners will have their work displayed in Congressman Miller's Washington, Greensboro, and Raleigh offices, and they received free framing and a $50 gift certificate from Jerry's Artarama.
Winners from the 4th District 2007 Competition were announced at a reception at the Durham Arts Council on April 28, 2007. They are:
- 1st Place - Erika Tierney-James, 12th grade, Leesville Road High School (teacher: Linda Stevens), piece: "Classifieds," medium: paper collage. This piece will hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for a year with other first-place pieces from across the country. Southwest Airlines will fly her and her parents to DC for the hanging ceremony.
- 2nd place - Phillipa Armes, 10th grade, Leesville Road High School (teacher: Emily Beck), piece: "Self-Portrait," media: mixed - pen & ink/watercolor. This piece will hang in Congressman Price's DC office for a year.
- 3rd place - Paige Lawall, 12th grade, Apex High School (teacher: Leatha Koefler), piece: "Looking Up," medium: acrylic painting. This piece will hang in Congressman Price's Raleigh office for a year.
The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide competition for high school students, grades 9-12, organized by the U.S. House of Representatives and held annually each spring. United Arts has facilitated the 4th Congressional District Competition since its inception and is proud to assist the new 13th Congressional District. The competition was first launched in 1982 and has involved more than 4,500 local contests and more than 650,000 high school students. All first place district winners are awarded a $5,000-per-year scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design.
