Students from Fuquay-Varina High School integrated the arts and science curricula to create works of art illustrating science concepts for their Science Fair. Leading the project were science teacher, Randy Senzig, and United Arts Council Artist in the Schools teaching artist, Bryant Holsenbeck. The school's Marine Ecology students collected trash from outside their school and turned these found objects into a marine life food chain. Their sculptures ranged from seagulls and seahorses made from juice boxes and chip bags to a seal made from a discarded football and torn trash bags (above). This science-based after-school arts residency was made possible through United Arts and a grant from Time Warner Cable's "Connect A Million Minds" program designed to engage and encourage young people to pursue education and career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
