Master Classes in the Arts Awarded to 13 Wake High Schools

[Raleigh, NC]—For the third year, United Arts will offer a series of master classes in the arts in area high schools. Thirteen Wake schools applied and were awarded a total of 17 master classes this school year. Schools selected artists from a list of options and also had the opportunity to write in a preferred artist. The following six artists were requested by the schools who applied:

Gaspard & Dancers (dance)

Eric McRay (visual art)

Mike Wiley (theatre)

Sheila Kerrigan (theatre)

Jason Karn (choral)

Ryan Fox (visual art)

United Arts has been sponsoring Artists in Schools programs in most of the Wake County elementary and middle schools for more than 30 years. The master classes are a way to connect with more high schools and give students an opportunity to receive hands-on instruction from a professional artist in dance, theatre, visual arts, or music for a short, intensive experience that adds to the regular arts curriculum. After piloting this program to select high schools for two years, United Arts is pleased to offer this opportunity to all WCPSS high schools.

“We are excited to be able to fund these master classes at 13 Wake high schools this year. It’s a great learning opportunity for students—one that often has a lasting impact,” according to Eleanor Oakley, United Arts President and CEO.

This year's master classes are supported by $13,800 in ticket sale proceeds from Pieces of Gold, the annual Wake County Public Schools student talent showcase held at Memorial Auditorium
