The main focus of my Kaboom Poetry show is to give students and teachers a wide variety of poems so they can experience the depth and scope of poetry. I've memorized dozens of poems that I can act out, sometimes using audience volunteers, sometimes reciting the poem with dramatic flair, and sometimes teaching the audience various gestures or responses to the words in the poem. We have a lot of fun while learning about poetry at the same time. I've also learned anecdotes, historical facts and details about the poets' lives, so I try to include some these details into the show. My hope is that as students and teachers are entertained, they also recognize the history of poetry, its cultural connections, and its emotional value in our lives. I share poems from a wide variety of traditions -- from William Shakespeare to Pablo Neruda to Langston Hughes and perhaps lesser known but excellent poets such as Jimmy Santiago Baca, Eve Merriam and Eleanor Farjean.
